New Format for the next Reefathlon Event

The Reefathlon event is set to return in September, this time featuring a road race starting with a 'no man (or woman or child) left behind' first loop of the 19 mile Reefathlon circuit. This will take place at a social pace to allow everyone to take part. This will be followed by a second lap completed at racing pace, with the ladies and juniors sprinting it out for their categories at the end of the second lap. The open and veteran men (as well as anyone else keen on doing so) will then continue to complete a third lap of the circuit, with the open men and veteran men sprinting for positions at the end of the third lap.

Stiff competition at the latest Reefathlon!

Sunday, May 30th saw the latest Reefathlon event take place at The Reef. This event was the closing race to the Cayman Classic Series of road race’s organized by the Cayman Cycling Association. With the Cayman Series Title being so close after the first four races – the Reefathlon 19 mile time trial was the title decider!

The event saw 49 cyclists take part and the local course record broken twice in one day! In November’s Reefathlon Jerome Ameline set the local course record at 42:46, on Sunday Jasper Mikkelsen broke it with a time of 42:38, however his victory was short-lived when Michele Smith came flying through the finish line with a time of 41:51 clearly smashing Jerome’s old record. A great day was ad by all and the next event will be September 26th 2010 – more details to follow soon.

Pete Stetina breaks the course record – all local riders step up their game!

Our second Reefathlon proved more popular than ever with our ‘celebrity’ cyclist Pete Stetina causing quite a stir! Our local cyclists relished in the chance to cycle alongside the U23 time trial champ of States. On the day, or local riders stepped up their game and it was looking to be quite a close contest for the $1000 prize. Pete Stetina did break the course record in a time of 38.33 but Michael Joanisse, a surprise entry from Canada brought some serious competition to the race finishing just 2 minutes behind Pete. Jerome Ameline took the US$250 for being the first local rider across the line. Jerome also beat his time from last Reefathlon by a whole minute. Our local Cayman riders really did step up the challenge so well done!
